Meet John – John Masters Organics

A Niagra Falls, NY native with a natural talent for cutting and coloring hair, John Masters’ career skyrocketed in the 1970’s with jobs at top salons in Miami and New York. In the 80’s, even as recognition of his styling talent grew in fashion and celebrity circles, John became fascinated with organics in his personal life. He began to realize the serious health risks posed by inhaling and handling harsh salon chemicals day to day and became committed to creating a toxin-free salon environment. Eventually, John started to see clients in his NY apartment, where he used only ammonia-free herbal and clay based dyes from Europe and experimented with non-toxic forms of hair care.

In 1991, John created his first organic product, Dry Hair Nourishment and Defrizzer. Ongoing, extensive research and testing of essential oils, plant extracts, and other health-food staples led shortly thereafter to the launch of John Masters Organics, the first comprehensive, luxury-organic hair care line. Still working quietly from his apartment, John (and the products) managed to attract a large and diverse “conscious clientele,” and in 1994, he opened his first Soho salon.

Under the name John Masters Organics, the salon quickly gained recognition as the only “clean-air salon” in Manhattan, meaning, they simply would not offer services – perms, manicures and many kinds of color – that require the use of toxic chemicals.

In ensuing years, the visionary John Masters Organics concept has continued to gather momentum. In 2001, the salon outgrew its original space and moved to the current Sullivan St. location. In the same year, John launched a line of paraben-free, organic facial skin care in response to overwhelming customer demand and in 2004, the brand was recipient of the coveted Soil Association Award for Best Organic Product Line in Europe.

Today, John Masters Organics is sold in 20 countries. John Masters splits his time between New York City and his country home in upstate New York. He continues to cut and color hair in the SoHo salon and, Maya, his treasured canine companion, is never far from his side. John remains dedicated to developing new products and updating the existing range as more advanced “natural product technologies” become available. His dream is still to provide the, “most organic, most natural product available on the market.”

How to Prevent Razor Burn

There is nothing as frustrating as trying to clean up with a close shave, only to be suffer from razor burn. Razor burn is a common skin irritation that occurs after shaving, but there are ways to combat this unsightly and uncomfortable condition. By following the steps below you can minimize the effects of razor burn and shaving-related skin irritation.

Steps

  1. Shave after taking a shower or after washing your face in warm water. Warm water and steam help soften skin and facial hair.
  2. Use new, sharp razor blades, and make sure to discard them before they get blunt. If you use an electric shaver, make sure to clean the blades regularly and to keep them clean and free of hairs.
  3. Dampen your skin and apply a pre-shave oil, try The Gentlemens Refinery’s The Standard Pre Shave Oil, to the area to be shaved. Dampening the skin will help to smooth on the oil, and will minimize the amount of product needed.
  4. Using a badger hair shave brush, try The Gentlemens Refinery’s The GRS 400, lather the entire area to be shaved with shaving cream, try The Gentlemens Refinery’s The Standard Shave Cream. Make sure to let the cream sit on your skin for a few minutes before shaving. This will increase the softness of your facial hair and will reduce the irritation to skin. It is important to use a cream specifically designed for shaving. Ordinary soap will dry out your skin and increase the likelihood of skin irritation.
  5. Shave with the grain of your facial hair with short, deliberate strokes. Long strokes often cause you to press down too hard on your skin, increasing razor contact with skin and making razor burn more likely.
  6. Rinse your blade after each stroke. If your razor is full of hair you will not get a close shave, and irritation is likely to occur.
  7. Wash your face in cold water after you’ve completed shaving. By washing your face in cool water you help to close pores and lessen skin irritation.
  8. Apply an aftershave balm, try The Standard After Shave Balm, or facial moisturizer, try The Gentlemens Refinery’s The Standard Moisturizer, to help keep your skin soft and to help reduce the likelihood of razor burn.

Tips

  • Although disposable razors and razor refills can be expensive, the price of using old, dull, or nicked razors is razor burn. Use a clean, sharp razor each time you shave. Generally, you will want to change blades every four shaves or so; if you have very coarse facial hair, you should probably change blades more often.
  • Always shave in the direction of the hair growth. If you shave against the grain you are more likely to suffer from ingrown hairs, irritation, and inflamed skin.
  • Avoid passing your razor over the same area of your face numerous times. Even though you desire the closest shave and smoothest face, each pass of the razor removes (and therefore irritates) small layers of skin.
  • If razor burn appears after shaving, apply a soothing aftershave, or another hydrating application to soothe the skin and reduce redness.
  • For extremely sensitive skin, use an ingrown hair treatment or a similar product to treat or prevent ingrown hairs when shaving and to eliminate the effects of razor burn.
  • Wait about 20 minutes after getting up before you shave to allow bodily fluids that have welled in your face during the night to disperse. Also, shave after exercising rather than before so that your sweat doesn’t irritate your skin.

Warnings

  • Taking proper care of your face when shaving will help reduce razor burn and will help keep your skin looking and feeling healthy.
  • A wet razor can lead to a dull razor. Make sure to thoroughly dry your razor before putting it away. Residual water and wet shaving applications can dull a razor. You can either use a towel to dry your razor, or you can air dry it by shaking it out after use. If you use a towel, simply dab your razor, stroking the razor across the towel may make your blade(s) dull

Loosen Up For Spring

Hello spring!

Now that you’re becoming more active, I’d like to help your muscles transition from winter to spring. The problem with cold winter months is we don’t move enough. Our bodies get out of shape and cold makes us stiff –a set up for injuries. When your body feels tight, it’s like wearing clothes or shoes that are too small. Don’t go there. Stretch!

HOW AND WHEN TO STRETCH AT HOME

  • Find a comfortable place in your apartment to lie on the floor–keep it free and clear so you don’t waste time setting up.
  • Stretch after your shower when muscles are heated up.
  • Ten minutes of stretching while lying down will do.
  • Stretch slowly and gently as you gradually wake up. Don’t compete with yourself. Focus on relaxing the muscles and letting them slowly ease, instead of vigorously pulling or pushing. Imagine your muscles are elastic bands getting longer, longer, longer!
  • If your muscles feel stubborn, stretch at the end of the day instead. Your body will be looser.
  • Stretching, as a singular focus, is meditative and calming, but if you thrive on multi-tasking, stretch while catching up on news or a favorite show.

HOW TO STRETCH AT YOUR DESK

Follow this link to Well&GoodNYC.com for an article on why my stretches help you sit more comfortably for hours.

What's My Summer Foundation Color?

Aahhhh Summer. Barbeques, picnics, reunions, weddings, besides for finally being warm and sunny (at least for us northerners), events and even more socializing seems to book up our weekends for the entire summer. And, because your skin can get enough sun exposure to tan or burn, even just going to the car every day, your regular foundation shade that you wear for most of the year suddenly has changed (or at least it should).
Here’s one part of the body that actually affects the foundation shade you should wear, and it’s NOT your face!

It’s your chest!
Yes, now is the time where we show more skin, grab more V-necks, tank tops, and sun dresses. If you’re a beach bunny, changing foundation shades is something you know about and usually plan for, and if you’re a good girl and wear your sunscreen, many times, the chest is the pace that really takes a beating from the sun. It’s where we freckle more (especially as we age), and even forgotten about in our morning routine when moisturizing, especially if you rely on your moisturizer to provide that SPF. Let’s face it, who wants to use that much more moisturizer on your chest when you paid good money for that stuff! Matching your foundation to your lighter tonedface while having a darker toned chest, well, let’s just say….NOT good. You can look pastey, and sometimes even silly.

What’s the Solution?
Choosing a foundation shade that matches more closely to your chest and arms as opposed to only your face, which is most likely lighter than the rest of you. Blending the overall tone of your skin so your face and chest look like one shade. That means, going a shade or two darker in your foundation than what may typically be your perfect match. You want to blend and match the two areas, so the eye sees no tonal difference when looking at your cute new tank top and your flawless complexion, and in the less than 3 seconds it takes to do that (and another 3 seconds to say “oh my gosh WHAT is she thinking?”).

Almost every woman I do makeup on in the summer has a darker chest than her face. And after a sunny weekend, Monday’s face is usually darker than Friday’s “I’ve-been-in-the-office-all-week” face. If it all sounds complicated and overwhelming, it’s absolutely NOT! We’re going to share exactly what to do to and how easy it is to match your skin all summer long with Ferro Cosmetics mineral foundations!

Finding Your Match
Determine how much darker your chest is by applying your foundation to your chest. This will help YOU see just how much darker you need to go, and how off the foundation shade your using may or may not be. You can do this with your Fabuki or Flat Top brush the same way you normally apply to the face. You can also use a foundation sponge or concealer brush, and dip into your mineral foundation and apply to a small area on your chest.

After you applied, How much darker is it than your face than your chest? Is it “whitening” your chest? Does it blend nicely but maybe a tad too light? Is it Matching but lacking that bronzy/golden tone? Imagine your chest is your face, and let your mind determine what you would do when finding a shade.

Here’s what we suggest:
The Easiest Option: Buy a Foundation Shade Starter Kit (just $19.95) in the next darker skin tone family, which will have every shade of Ultimate and Radiance in all the undertones, so you can customize with the exact right shades at all times. Example, if your skin tone falls in Light Medium skin tones, you would select for “Medium to Tan Skin Tones” Shade System.

Too whitening: go darker by at least 1- 2 shades.

Lacking gold tones: Grab a Mini in any of our “Golden” shades and mix into your existing shade for a custom shade (Golden Honey for Caucasian skin and Golden Mocha for darker or ethnic skin).

We are always here to help you personally as well, so contact us by phone or email and we’ll be more than happy to help guide you to the exact shade and products for your summer skin needs!
